It exhibits a slow to moderate growth rate and reaches a height of about 15 feet and a spread of about 12 feet. You can also find them ruffled in the same array of colors including what many call blue. You ll know leaf spot when you see it. The rose of sharon hibiscus syriacus also known as an althea shrub is a mid summer bloomer in white pink red or purple with a red center.
Not only is it well suited to any garden but it also does great on terraces and balconies. This variety is the hardiest we ve ever seen. A late summer bloomer each blossom is 5 to 6 inches in diameter. This shrub produces beautiful double red blooms that look particularly stunning when planted in groups or around borders. Red heart althea has the striking white blossoms of diana varieties but with a striking ruby colored center. It grows as far north as zone 5 you don t see many rose of sharon shrubs in that part of the country. Althea is a deciduous ornamental shrub more commonly referred to as the rose of sharon.
